Post Fabtech

The MIE Solutions Team had a great time at FABTECH this year in Atlanta. We had the opportunity to make new friends, enjoy the hum of machines around us, and meet with our amazing customers. It was great seeing our friends from EVS Metal, Diamond Eye Mfg, GH Metal Solutions, Westport Precision, Herman Reeves Sheet Metal, Evans Manufacturing, and many other amazing companies!

The show started off strong with our very own CFO and co-founder, Don Clutter, presenting on the importance of activity-based costing and estimating.

Last Thursday, the MIE Solutions team participated in the RUN4MFG 5K, which supports the future of manufacturing. It was a great time and we all enjoyed the physical activity. The next day, our team visited two elementary schools where we were able to donate the televisions that we in our booth at FABTECH.

Henderson Mill Elementary School and Hope-Hill Elementary School were both so appreciative of the donation and MIE Solutions was happy to learn that the televisions would come to good use at the schools.

Our team enjoyed having guests stop by to try their luck on our spin wheel and battle one-on-one in a game of Connect 4. If you didn’t get a chance to stop by, then visit us at next year’s show in Chicago.

MIE Solutions Scholarship Opportunity

For the 2018 Fall Semester, MIE Solutions will be offering a $500 scholarship to a student who writes a winning essay regarding their future career and educational objectives in computer science and/or computer engineering.

MIE Solutions is a leading provider of production control software for the entire manufacturing sector. Incorporating Quoting/Estimating, RFQ’s, Work Orders, Purchasing, MRP, Stock Control, Costing, Scheduling, Reporting, Optional Shop Floor Data Capture, Delivery Notes, Invoices and Accounting.


We would like you to tell your story in a brief narrative, starting with an introduction about who you are, your interests, and anything else you feel we should know about you. Then, please provide your entry in a 300-500 word essay about your college experience so far, or a Prezi/Powerpoint Presentation. Graphic or creative presentations are welcome as well.


Judging Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who best demonstrates a genuine desire and goal of using the scholarship to advance in their computer science & engineering, and an overall passion for knowledge.

When to Upgrade Your ERP Software

Kitting – What is it and why is it useful?

What is kitting?

Kitting is a method used by manufacturers to help manage their inventory and reduce the time-consuming task of gathering inventory and required components. Kitting is used to pre-package the necessary components for installation before sending them to the field and to pre-package before assembling a product together.



For example, if you have ever assembled a dresser or bed from Ikea, then you’re aware that it included all the nuts, bolts, and screws you needed and were nicely packaged together so they’d be easy to find. This is a form of kitting and we see this replicated inside many manufacturing facilities in order to streamline product assembly. Grouping separate, but related, components together as a customized kit greatly reduces material handling and processing to decreasing time used for assembly.


Questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you have a vertical product line?
  • Are you running into inventory shortages?
  • Are you trying to streamline your shop?


Kitting helps manufacturers reduce material handling time and improve workflow efficiency. Kitting has several advantages such as reducing the time it takes to process parts and reducing downtime in the production assembly line. Since your items are grouped together, you can focus on getting your production completed.

Finding Equilibrium Between Supply and Demand


How can we measure and track supply and demand? More importantly, how do we find equilibrium between the two?


Let’s start simple. Envision your company’s demand as the number of purchase orders you receive. This is the quantity consumers are willing to buy of your product based on its price point. For example, let’s assume a customer is willing to buy 20 chair legs at the price of $10 each.


Now, let’s consider supply. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of economics, supply is simply the amount of product you are willing to supply to the market based on a certain price you will be receiving from selling that product. For example, you’re willing to produce 40 chair legs at $10 per leg; however, your customer is only willing to buy 20 at a price of $10 per leg.


Now we can talk about equilibrium. What’s the problem here? Your customer feels that the price is too high, lowering the number of chair legs they’re willing to purchase. If neither party is willing to budge (because your overhead is too high, or your customer cannot afford to pay more), then an equilibrium will not be reached

Cycle Counting – What is it and how can it help you maintain accurate inventory quantities?



Does this sound like you?

  • When you need to count inventory, you perform a physical count and manually enter the count into an Excel spreadsheet or paper worksheet
  • You often run out of inventory

  • When you need to produce a part, you go out to the shop floor and physically see if you have the needed material(s)


How can you make your warehouse more efficient, thus saving your employees time and saving you money in the long run?


Cycle Counting works by creating an inventory auditing procedure, which falls under inventory management, where a small subset of inventory, in a specific location, is counted on a specified day.


For example, rather than counting large amounts of inventory every day (or week), you audit your inventory to be counted on certain days, for certain products and maintain an ongoing count. The automated creation of the inventory audit list will streamline this process.

Guide to ERP Selection (Part 2)


Last week’s Quick Tip identified your needs, identified parameters, and created your team. We are here again to give you some more tips on ERP Selection.

Now that you have done your prep work, you are now ready to view demos.

Having that hands-on experience allows you to get a feel for the software in which you are investing. Have a team of representatives sit in on the demo and ask the ERP company to plug in some of your company’s data so you can see your machines, employees, parts, and inventory in action. That should be a good indication of compatibility.


When you do choose the software, implement comfortably

Implement at a pace that is best for your business. Work with customer service (or the assigned project manager) to help you choose the best plan of implementation. Put aside dedicated time for decision-making and the implementation process.


Train yourself and others

You need to make sure that you and your employees are confident using the system to run your processes. Training classes, customer support, and FAQs are great resources and it is highly recommended to utilize each, when necessary.


During implementation, you should measure and observe the system

Never stop evaluating. See what is working and what is not and aim for optimization!



Watch for red flags

If something isn’t working as expected, reach out to your software provider’s customer support to see if the issue can be fixed or adapted. Don’t be afraid to “cut the cord” when there is nothing that can be done about the issue. If the system is not living up to what was promised during the demo phase, it may be best to explore new options.
