What are commodities?  Commodities are raw ingredients or components that make up any good.


In manufacturing, some common commodities are aluminum, copper, and other metals.

The price of commodities is continuously fluctuating so the cost of producing a part can change from the last time that order had come in.

Before you even begin, it’s important to:

    1. Understand Operations and Workflow: All departments that will be using the software need to have an idea of what they need to know and how to learn it. The ERP company you’re working with should plan a roadmap and time frame to reach your implementation goals and work with each department that is responsible in learning them.
    2.  Data Import: You should know what data and date range you would like imported to your new ERP software. Data typically exported from your current system would be customers, suppliers, item master, open AR and Open AP. You should make a list of all information that you need  before going live depending on the data you are able to extract from your current system.
    3. Customizations: Your ERP company should also be able to customize the software to a certain extent to fit your needs. Every shop is run differently and your software should flow in an understandable way. Customizations should not hinder your ability to upgrade.
    4. Support: Quality support is necessary to make sure your employees are equipped to use the software to its full potential. Your employees should have access to training material, on-site, online, phone and e-mail support as a way to contact the company with any questions.

Quick Tip: Nesting- How to Maximize Materials Used

Do you ever make multiple parts from a single sheet of raw material?


Imagine you had to cut hundreds of assembly parts like gussets, from a single sheet of metal for several Work Orders from different customers.


The finished parts all come from the same sheet of metal with remnants left over.

How would you attribute cost if one Work Order is for twenty parts and the other is for fifty parts? Instead of physically issuing each small piece of metal needed for each Work Order you can save time by using nesting software and ERP.


What is nesting? In manufacturing, nesting groups common processes together to maximize efficiency on the shop saving time and money.

Nesting software creates a “sheet layout” to maximize the materials used. It automatically and strategically arranges the required quantities of individual parts on sheets or plates of material.

For example, when two different jobs need to be powder coated the same color black.
